Granite Metate Chico

These small, traditional granite metate are carved individually from stone gathered from the Tlacolula Valley quarry in Oaxaca. They’re carved by a master stoneworker who first shapes each piece with a disk, and then follows with intensive hand-chiseling.

The metate are best on the table or in the kitchen for grinding small amounts of seeds, spices, or salt. We love it for fresh grinding fragrant toasted cumin and salt just before a meal, using the metate as a small serving vessel at the table.

The metates range vary in color from a neutral grey to very, very subtle green or blush depending on the block of stone used.
